'Bout Ready to Give Up on Home Automation for a While

Last night my Viewpad's HDD failed - AGAIN, I just replaced it 6 weeks ago. It must be too hot in there for it. (last episode here: http://www.cocoontech.com/index.php?showtopic=773 )

I decided to recover what I could from it using my USB 2.0 external HDD case. I had problems using this with my

Cheap, Uninsulated, Poorly Heated House

Candace and the boys 16 Jan 2007 16-58-52Boy I wish we owned our house and that the hose we owned was not the one we currently live in. The house is two stories, is barely insulated and only has a single zone of HVAC coverage. You'd think a house that is less than 10 years old would have been built better than this. It got so cold today that everyone has to bundle up inside the house. Our poor little boys were wearing their winter jackets INSIDE!

If I'd of known we were going to spend 5+ years in San Antonio instead of only 1 (like we originally thought) or 2 (like we were later lead to beleive), than I would have defineatly bought a home. Heck, the house we're renting is so cheap we probably could have nearly paid for it in full with out rent alone!

Look at my poor family all bundled-up inside the house:

Darn You Office 2007 Ribbon

I’ve been playing with MS Office 2007 for about a week now, and one thing I can say is it sure looks pretty, but the ribbon takes some getting used to. I used to be able to blindly click the various buttons in Word and Excel (I rarely used buttons in PowerPoint, as I have most of the shortcut keys memorized and use them with cat-like reflexes). Now I have to relearn where everything in

Defineately Have to Move!
Written By: John Fuda

Well, last week our property management company called us and told us that the home owner's daughter's family was moving back to San Antonio and will be moving into the house.

So now we're going to have to move 1-3 years ahead of schedule.

We sure are lucky!

Oh, and they want us out by June 15th, but our lease is through June 30, and the property manager says they can't make us leave a day sooner than June 30.

So, I went and applied for on-post housing, which is a good thing becuase we'd both have a <1mile ride to work, and we'd save money becuase instead of a housing allowance, we'd get free "rent" and utilities, whereas now our housing allowance pays out rent and about 2/3 of our utilities (phone, satellite and internet will come out of our pocket whereever we live, though). We'll also likely get breaks in our property and auto insurance due to the better security and shorter commutes too, so it's really not a bad move. Oh, and if I move on post, the military pays for the move, otherwise, I do (since this is not a military-directed move).

The bad thing is that we have 2-1/2 months to get out of the house and the on-post housing waiting list is 3-6 months. I may have to see if I can get my boss to pull some strings, but the housing people think I'll make it in under the wire...

If that fails, we'll have to find another place and see if they'll give us a two year lease.

So these are the options we're considering:

- Move into on-post housing as soon as possible, hopefully by the end of June.
- If on-post housing is not available by the end of June
+ If the military will store our household goods until housing is available, stay with freinds or in a hotel (~30 days?) until it's ready
+ If the military will not store our household goods, store them ourselves if the cost is reasonable
+ If neither of the above are true, look for another rental in ur existing neighboorhood and sign a 2-year lease

So now I have to uninstall all my hard-wired switches, my OTA antenna setup, my video & IR distro system, and my AB8SS/Elk speaker system. I may not have the will nor the means to reinstall them after we move (If we live in "historic" on post housing, I will be very limited in what I can do to the place, and it probably won't have a nuetral run for my switches!!!)

I finally got the WAF high and now it's going to go away. We've both really gotten used to the things we have automated. My automation will probably be limited to the living room/home theater when we get where we're going.

We're also expecting our second child (due in October) and we're going to be moving while my wife is 6-months pregnant (just like the last time).

This whole deal really stinks. We've been excellent tenants, in fact, I voluntarilly pay my rent 2-months out (just in case I have a brain-lapse), have never been late, and have probably improved the appearance of the guy's yard 10-fold since we moved in. My wife said she's pulling up all the flowers when we leave!!!

Hopefully, we'll move on-post one way or the other
